DADDY YANKEE TO DROP NEW ALBUM, EL CARTEL 3: THE BIG BOSS
Daddy Yankee's first studio album since 2004's groundbreaking Barrio Fino promises to pour more gasolina on the fire that is reggaeton. The Cartel: The Big Boss (El Cartel/Interscope), continues to expand reggaeton's power and reach by featuring such diverse guest artists as Fergie, Jim Jones, Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls, Akon, and Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas
Both Akon and Will.i.am also produce, as do Mr. ColliPark and Scott Storch (the latter producing the first single, "Impacto") along with Reggaeton producers Eli "El Musicologo", Tiny Tunes, Diesel and Menace.
For Daddy Yankee, The Cartel: The Big Boss marks the next step in a phenomenal career that has taken him from the barrios outside San Juan, Puerto Rico, to being named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world by Time magazine. "Reggaeton needs a change and I'm changing too," says Daddy Yankee. "You can't rest on the past. This album is very different. My roots are still there but now there's more, a side of me people haven't seen, including hip-hop. And I know the power music has too. I'm a leader in Latin culture. The album talks about the role we're playing in society. For people that don't know what's happening, we need to let them know what's going on."
In 2006, the live CD/DVD set Barrio Fino en Directo was the biggest selling Latin album of the year according to Billboard, was named Reggaeton Album of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. Daddy Yankee was also named Artist of the Year at the Latin Billboard Awards and MTV Video Music Awards Latinoamerica, Latin Songwriter of the Year by ASCAP and Urban Artist of the Year at Univision's Premios Lo Nuestro Awards. Along with the Time magazine honor, People en Espanol ranked him among the upcoming year's 100 Most Influential People.
With his rapid-fire freestyle flow and clever lyrics, Daddy Yankee helped pioneer the sound of reggaeton. In 2004, "Gasolina" from the studio Barrio Fino became the urban music anthem that put reggaeton on the music map and made DY its first platinum-certified star.
Daddy Yankee's influence within the genre is matched by his entrepreneurial vision. Besides being founder and CEO of his own record label and management company, he is one of Pepsi's Hispanic spokespersons and for sportswear powerhouse Reebok has created "Daddy Yankee by Rbk," a footwear, clothing and accessory line available in stores nationwide. Talento de Barrio, his first film, as actor and executive producer, is slated for a U.S. release later this year. The reggaeton star recently celebrated his first anniversary as the host of the Daddy Yankee On Fuego Radio Show, a nationally syndicated radio show on ABC Radio Networks which airs on 29 affiliates.
Daddy Yankee has not forgotten where he has come from either. For his native Puerto Rico, he was the first reggaeton artist to offer free concerts for the children of the projects. Most recently, he partnered with the Puerto Rico Department of Education to lead a school cleaning and beautification program. He also continues to be a spokesperson for the American Red Cross in the U.S. Hispanic community and a member of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet that reaches out to a new generation of volunteers and encourages people of all races, ages and ethnicities to support the Red Cross in their community. In 2007, Daddy Yankee will launch his own charitable organization, Fundacion Corazon Guerrero.

DON OMAR AND HAKEEM JOIN FORCES
After Don Omar's hugely successful Reggaeton concert in Cairo with Egyptian singer Hakeem, the two decide to team up on a track released on Hakeem's latest album.
After moments of tension due to a mechanical failure on a plane, he arrived in Egypt. After experiencing fear last week caused by a mechanical failure during a flight, the popular reggaeton artist Don Omar performed in Egypt alongside Hakeem to great success. They will record a duet together called “Tuigui”. This song will be included in Hakeem’s upcoming album called León de Egipto. The recording of this song marks the beginning of another phase in Don Omar’s soaring career and he thus becomes the first artist of this genre to sing alongside the Egyptian star.
The song’s video was shot yesterday in the Pyramids of Egypt. Don Omar got a reception fit for a diplomat at Cairo’s international airport on April 11. Surrounded by a score of interviewers and hundreds of fans, the singer of “Dale, don, dale” managed to leave the airport by an alternative route.
The following day, the artist gave a press conference alongside Hakeen, during which both expressed their mutual admiration and discussed their new project. Tuigui, written by the two artists, was produced by Eliel Lind and carries a strong message against racial discrimination.

BOTH The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times Spotlighted Calle 13’s Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo In Their Fall Music Preview of Key Upcoming Releases:
“Politically aware and wildly raunchy, proudly Puerto Rican and knowingly pan-American, the duo Calle 13 — the rapper Residente and the producer Visitante — is the most consistently startling group to emerge from reggaetón, a genre that has never confined it. On the duo’s third album, “Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo” (“Those Left Behind Are Coming With Me”), they annex Argentine cumbia villera and Eastern European Gypsy music.” – Jon Pareles, New York Times*
“Latin without borders…returning groundbreakers.... Puerto Rican hip-hop experimentalists Calle 13 have a new album ready; "Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo (The Ones Left Behind Are Coming With Me)”…. The first Reggae recordings
The first Reggae recordings in Latin America were made in Panama in the mid-1970s. A large number of Jamaican immigrants, brought in to build the Panama Canal, brought Reggae music with them and introduced it to the local population.
Nando Boom is considered one of the first raggamuffin deejays from Panama. Without Panamanian ragga deejays like El General, reggaeton would never have caught on.
Some even argue that reggaeton itself started in Panama, and that Puerto Rican artists merely added influences from house music and hip hop. Those, however, are defining elements of the reggaeton sound. Reggae is a style of music developed in Jamaica and is closely linked to the Rastafari movement, though not universally popular among Rastafarians.
This article provides extensive lists of events and significant personalities of the 1970s.
Panama Canal The Panama Canal is a large canal, 82 kilometres (51 miles) long, that cuts through the isthmus of Panama, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Jamaicas style of rapping that was the predecessor of todays rap/ hip-hop.
Raggamuffin (or ragga) is a kind of reggae that includes digitized backing instrumentation.
House music refers to a collection of styles of electronic dance music, the earliest forms beginning in the early- to mid- 1980s.
In 1985, rapper Vico C from Puerto Rico produced one of the first Spanish-language hip hop records in Puerto Rico. Thus the two main influences of the genre were in place, as well as the two main producing countries. 1985 is a common year starting on Tuesday of the Gregorian calendar.
Vico C ( born Armando Lozada Cruz on September 8, 1971) is a Puerto Rican rap singer who was born in New York but raised in Puerto Rico.
Reggae production took off seriously in Panama in the early nineties, about the same time Jamaican ragga imports were becoming popular in Puerto Rico. It was common practice to translate an original Jamaican reggae song (the same melody and rhythm, but with translated lyrics). Towards the middle of the decade, Puerto Ricans were producing their own "riddims" with clear influences from hip hop and other styles. These are considered the first proper reggaeton tracks, initially called "under", a short form of "Underground".
The reggaeton scene widened when Puerto Rican and Cuban styles perfused the Panamanian-style reggae. Today, the music flourishes throughout Latin America..

Daddy Yankee extends reggaetón empire to movies
After having sold millions of albums worldwide, Daddy Yankee — the man who led the reggaetón crossover — is adding “Gasolina” to his résumé.
Daddy Yankee (second from r.) in "Talento de Barrio."
“It feels incredible to be the producer and star of a movie having great success in Puerto Rico,” Yankee says about “Talento de Barrio,” which broke box office records on the island for a hometown film when it opened last month.
The film, opening here Oct.3, stars Yankee as Edgar Dinero, a young man who falls in love with a girl from his barrio just as he is becoming involved in the street life.
“Nobody has made a movie like this,” Yankee says over the phone from Puerto Rico, where he lives.
“We’re showing what we go through in the barrio, the real essence of barrios in Puerto Rico. Edgar is stuck in the streets and dealing drugs with his crew.”
Yankee, who developed a permanent limp after falling victim to a bullet from an AK-47 in his youth, has some things in common with his character, but says the film is not based on his life.
“It’s not my biography,” he says, though he admits his upbringing helped him play the role.
“I grew up around a lot of people like my character in the ’hood, and that’s the reason it was easy for me to identify with him.”
Some critics have said “Talento de Barrio” is too violent, but Yankee contends there’s more to the film than the street life.
“There is violence and all that in the movie, but it’s about other things, about a mom who protects her son and about the idea of a man being un hombre de su palabra — a man of his word,” he explains.
And he says he believes a big part of the movie’s success springs from the message it sends.
“At the end of the movie, we offer a powerful message,” he says. “I’ve been getting calls from mothers and fathers telling me, ‘Yo, my son was going through the same situation and saw your movie and you made him think.’”
In recent weeks, the movie’s box office success has been matched by that of the film’s original soundtrack, released on Aug. 12, which has topped Billboard’s Top Latin Album charts and is at No. 3 this week.
“This is the first time that a Latino comes out with a movie and a soundtrack with original songs,” Yankee boasts.
The 14 songs on the soundtrack range from familiar genres like Spanish hip hop and classic reggaetón to salsa, bachata and R&B.
The single “Pose” mixes hip hop and dance with Latin and African-American rhythms.
Yankee is hoping the movie’s success on the island will carry over to the U.S., even if it’s “hard for some people” because it’s in Spanish with subtitles.
“But if you’re from the ’hood or the ghetto,” he says, “you’ll identify with the movie because all of the barrios in the world have the same scenario.”
